The Story of Sir William Thatcher Ulrich
A Craftsman’s Son
William Thatcher was born in a small rural village to John Thatcher, a humble craftsman, and his wife Shannyn.
His mother died giving birth to him, leaving William to be raised by his father alone.
Though poor, John possessed an unwavering belief that his son could become something greater than the life they had been given. From an early age, William listened to stories of knights, heroes, and champions who stood between ordinary people and the darkness.
Those stories became his dream.
Yet in the world he lived in, knighthood was reserved for nobles and the wealthy. For the son of a craftsman, it was an impossible ambition.
The Dream of Knighthood
When William was eleven years old, a fever swept through the village.
Though he and his father survived, the illness left John Thatcher nearly blind. Knowing he could no longer properly provide for his son, John made the difficult decision to place William into the service of Lord Adhemar.
The lord was neither kind nor generous, but he could provide food, shelter, and opportunities that John never could.
William accepted the sacrifice his father made on his behalf and resolved to make something of himself.
The Legend of Sir Ulrich
When William was seventeen, fate intervened.
Travelling with Lord Adhemar’s household to tournament competitions, the lord died unexpectedly along the roadside. Faced with an uncertain future, William and the remaining members of the household devised a desperate plan.
Roland, Wat, Kate, and eventually Geoffrey helped create a fiction.
William Thatcher would become Sir Ulrich.
With forged papers, borrowed equipment, and a noble name, William entered tournaments pretending to be a knight.
What began as a deception soon became something more.
William possessed genuine skill, courage, and determination. As victories accumulated, the legend of Sir Ulrich began to grow.
The lie became a symbol of the man William hoped one day to become.
The Vigilant Order
Following a major tournament victory, William’s talent attracted the attention of the Vigilant Order.
Unlike many knightly brotherhoods, the Order cared little for noble blood or lineage. Their purpose was darker and more dangerous than glory on a tournament field.
The Vigilant Order existed to defend ordinary people from supernatural threats.
Recognising William’s character as much as his skill, the Order invited him to join their ranks.
For the first time in his life, William saw a path toward becoming the knight he had always dreamed of being.
The Night of the Attack
A little over a year later, William rode with a patrol investigating strange reports from a distant village.
Only during the journey did he realise the destination was his own childhood home.
By the time the knights arrived, the village was already burning.
Living shadows stalked the streets while a terrible Shadow Demon directed the attack. Villagers fled through smoke and fire as homes burned around them.
William and his mentor, Sir Colville, gathered survivors into the village inn and prepared a desperate defence.
The battle that followed changed William’s life forever.
The Lantern of Saint Jocelyn
As the Shadow Demon pressed its attack, Sir Colville revealed one of the Order’s sacred relics: the Lantern of Saint Jocelyn.
While William fought to hold back the darkness, Sir Colville channelled divine power through the lantern.
Radiant light erupted from the relic and drove the creature back.
For a moment, victory seemed possible.
Then the Shadow Demon struck.
Its tail shattered the lantern and mortally wounded Sir Colville.
Though the divine light ultimately forced the creature to retreat, the cost was terrible.
Before dying, Sir Colville spoke his final words:
“Protect the innocent.”
Those words became the guiding principle of William’s life.
Too Late
As dawn broke, William raced through the ruined village searching for his father.
He found him dying inside their home.
The old man, now completely blind, recognised his son’s voice immediately.
Even in his final moments, John Thatcher expressed pride rather than regret.
“You became the man I hoped you would be.”
Moments later, William lost the last member of his family.
Within a single night he lost both his father and his mentor.
The Truth
Returning to the Vigilant Order, William delivered his report.
He described the Shadow Demon, the destruction of the village, and the death of every knight except himself.
Then he revealed a second truth.
His name was not truly Ulrich.
He was William Thatcher, son of a craftsman who had built his dream upon a lie.
Expecting judgement, he instead found understanding.
The Order saw not deception, but courage.
The Knighting
When William finally recovered from his wounds, the Grandmaster of the Vigilant Order performed the rite of knighthood.
He rose bearing a new name.
Sir William Thatcher Ulrich.
The title honoured both the man he truly was and the knight he had once pretended to be.
From that day forward, the dream became reality.
The Dark Knight
The surviving members of the Order eventually gave him another name.
The Dark Knight.
Some said it was because he emerged from a burning village covered in ash and soot.
Others believed it was because he faced a darkness that should have killed him.
William never argued with the title.
To him, it serves as a reminder of the night he could not save everyone.
The Hunt Continues
The Shadow Demon was never destroyed.
It escaped into the darkness after promising that it would one day return.
Since that night, William has dedicated himself to hunting supernatural threats wherever they appear.
He carries the broken Lantern of Saint Jocelyn with him always. Though its divine power has faded, scholars of the Vigilant Order believe it may one day be restored.
Until then, it remains both a memorial and a promise.
One day he will find the creature responsible for destroying his home.
And when he does, he intends to finish what began on the night the village burned.
