D&D Character
Nox Hollowman
A Lightfoot Halfling rogue whose journey from the streets of Baldur's Gate to the halls of Candlekeep is built on second chances, loyalty, and life in the shadows.
Overview
Nox Hollowman is a Lightfoot Halfling rogue and member of the Hands of the Keeper, a group of adventurers operating on behalf of Candlekeep.
Raised amongst criminals in the shadows of Baldur’s Gate, Nox learned from an early age that survival often depended on remaining unseen. His life changed when an attempted break-in at Candlekeep brought him to the attention of Janussi, Keeper of Tomes. Rather than punishment, he was offered food, shelter, purpose, and a second chance.
Today, Nox walks a difficult path between distrust and compassion, using the skills he learned on the streets to help protect others from suffering the same fate he once endured.

The Story of Nox Hollowman
Abandoned
Nox never knew his birth parents.
Found as an infant and raised by the Vexx family, he grew up amongst a criminal organisation known as the Gallowkin. Though they claimed to provide shelter and protection, they treated abandoned children as tools to be exploited.
The name “Hollowman” was intended as a cruel joke. Nox was repeatedly told he was empty, worthless, and destined for nothing more than a life of petty crime.
For years, he believed them.
Life in the Shadows
Growing up in Baldur’s Gate taught Nox many lessons.
He learned how to move unnoticed through crowded streets. He learned which alleys were safe, which faces could not be trusted, and how to survive when nobody cared whether he lived or died.
As the years passed, he became increasingly skilled at remaining unseen. Stealth became more than a survival skill—it became part of who he was.
Yet despite everything he experienced, Nox never lost the belief that people deserved better than the life he had been given.
The Hollow Coin
Around Nox’s neck hangs a battered copper coin with a crude hole punched through its centre.
The coin was deliberately damaged by one of his guardians, who mocked him by claiming it was now just as hollow as he was.
For years Nox carried the coin out of habit.
Over time, however, its meaning changed.
What was once a symbol of cruelty became a reminder of the person he refuses to become. It represents everyone overlooked, discarded, or forgotten by society.
The Hollow Coin remains one of Nox’s most treasured possessions.
Candlekeep
Everything changed when Nox attempted to sneak into Candlekeep.
He was not looking for treasure or forbidden knowledge. He simply needed shelter, warmth, and somewhere safe to sleep.
Instead of punishment, he found kindness.
Janussi, Keeper of Tomes, saw potential where others had only seen a thief. She offered him food, work, and a place amongst the scholars and caretakers of Candlekeep.
It was Janussi who first called him “Shadow”, a nickname that has remained with him ever since.
For the first time in his life, Nox felt as though he belonged somewhere.
The Hands of the Keeper
Years later, Nox became associated with the Hands of the Keeper, a group operating in service to Candlekeep.
Though he often claims not to enjoy working with others, travelling alongside fellow adventurers has challenged many of the assumptions he developed growing up.
Their journeys continue to shape both the rogue he has become and the person he hopes to be.
Personality
Nox presents himself as sarcastic, guarded, and difficult to impress.
Behind the sharp comments and cautious attitude lies someone who genuinely wants to help others, particularly those who have been ignored or abandoned.
Strengths
- Observant and attentive
- Quick-thinking under pressure
- Fiercely loyal once trust is earned
- Resourceful and adaptable
Weaknesses
- Slow to trust strangers
- Struggles to ask for help
- Often assumes the worst of people
- Can be stubborn and overly cautious
Appearance
Nox is taller than most halflings, with a lean build shaped by years spent surviving on the streets.
Dark hair often disappears beneath a hood, while watchful eyes constantly scan his surroundings. A thin scar on his right cheek serves as a reminder that even the best thieves occasionally make mistakes.
Though his clothing is practical and worn, he carries himself with a quiet confidence that was absent during his childhood.
Allies
Janussi, Keeper of Tomes
The person who changed the course of Nox’s life. Janussi offered him a future when nobody else would.
Shade
A loyal owl familiar who accompanies Nox on his travels. Quiet, observant, and often perched nearby, Shade reflects many of Nox’s own traits.
The Hands of the Keeper
Adventurers, allies, and travelling companions whose shared experiences continue to shape Nox’s story.
Enemies
The Gallowkin
The criminal organisation responsible for much of Nox’s difficult childhood.
Although he escaped years ago, the shadow of the Gallowkin still lingers over parts of his past.
