D&D Character
Dorn MacThar
An exiled half-orc warrior whose unwavering sense of honour cost him his home but forged him into a protector of the innocent.
Overview
Dorn MacThar is a half-orc barbarian whose life has been shaped by honour, sacrifice, and exile.
Once a respected warrior of the MacThar Clan in the Wyrmtooth Highlands, Dorn lost everything when he chose to uphold his people’s principles rather than obey a corrupt command. Cast out from the only home he had ever known, he now walks the roads of Faerûn helping those who cannot defend themselves.
Though his imposing appearance often causes others to fear him, Dorn is guided by compassion, loyalty, and a belief that strength exists to shield the vulnerable.

The Story of Dorn MacThar
Son of the Highlands
Dorn was born amongst the MacThar Clan, a proud half-orc people who settled in the rugged lands surrounding the Lake of Dragons.
The clan traced its origins to the distant northern wastes of Thar. Generations earlier, their ancestors abandoned a life of endless warfare and brutality in search of something better. In the mountains of the south they built a society founded upon strength, honour, and responsibility.
Dorn embraced those values from an early age.
As a hunter, warrior, and protector of his people, he believed a person’s worth was measured not by power, but by how that power was used.
The Fall of Honour
The turning point of Dorn’s life came when the clan’s future chief, Varek MacThar, entered into a secret alliance with agents of Darkhold.
Driven by ambition and greed, Varek pledged warriors of the clan to support Zhentarim raids against nearby settlements. Innocent people suffered as villages were attacked and caravans plundered.
Dorn could not accept what was happening.
The raids violated everything the MacThar ancestors had stood for. They represented the very corruption the clan had fled generations earlier.
When Chief Korrun refused to intervene against his own son, Dorn acted alone.
The Price of Duty
On the eve of another raid, Dorn confronted Varek.
Words quickly gave way to violence.
Though Varek fought with fury, Dorn was the stronger warrior. The battle ended beneath the mountain sky with Varek dead at Dorn’s feet.
Dorn had saved countless innocents.
Yet he had also slain the son of his chief.
For defying tribal authority, he was stripped of his place within the clan and banished from the Highlands forever.
Eight Years of Wandering
Exile became a journey rather than a punishment.
For eight years Dorn travelled across the Western Heartlands, the High Moor, and the northern frontiers. He survived through hunting, guarding caravans, and lending his strength wherever it was needed.
He rarely stayed in one place for long.
The road became his home.
Though many saw only a towering half-orc warrior carrying a greataxe, those who came to know him discovered a thoughtful and dependable companion.
Dorn earned a reputation as someone who would stand between danger and the innocent, regardless of the cost to himself.
The Road to Triboar
One journey in particular remained with Dorn long after it had ended.
While travelling from Yartar toward Triboar, he came upon a merchant caravan under attack along the Evermoor Way. The merchant, Mikel Soridem, travelled with two pack mules carrying iron ore and four hired guards.
The attack was swift and merciless.
Before the guards could properly react, raiders swept down from the hills and cut them down with arrows. Mikel was dragged from his wagon and beaten as the attackers prepared to seize his cargo and leave him for dead.
Dorn intervened.
With javelins, handaxes, and finally his greataxe, he killed every raider before they could escape. Though the battle was brief, the cost had already been paid by the four guards who had given their lives protecting the merchant.
Rather than continue on his way, Dorn remained with Mikel and escorted him safely to Triboar. Along the journey he led the raiders’ horses, carried the possessions of the fallen guards, and ensured their bodies would be returned to their families for proper burial.
Mikel repeatedly attempted to reward him, but Dorn refused any payment beyond food, drink, and a place to sleep for the night.
The merchant never forgot the kindness.
Mikel was known for carving small figurines from iron ore and scraps of metal gathered during his travels. Before the two men parted ways, he presented Dorn with one of these handmade creations as a token of gratitude.
Though simple in appearance, the gift became one of Dorn’s most treasured possessions.
The Music of the Mountains
Few expect a warrior of Dorn’s size to carry bagpipes.
Fewer still expect him to play them well.
The instrument connects him to the homeland he lost. Through music he remembers the mountain winds, the hunting trails of his youth, and the people he once called family.
Dorn speaks little about his past.
His music often tells the story instead.
Answering the Call
For years, Dorn travelled alone.
He expected little from the world beyond the next road, the next campfire, and the next village in need of help.
That changed when he encountered a notice posted by a man named Tuma.
The message called for capable individuals willing to investigate troubling events surrounding a distant settlement. While many might have seen it as just another job, Dorn recognised something familiar in the request: ordinary people facing dangers they could not face alone.
He answered the call.
What began as a simple contract soon brought him into the company of fellow adventurers. Though accustomed to walking alone, Dorn gradually found himself becoming part of something larger than himself once again.
For perhaps the first time since his exile, he began to feel the bonds of belonging return.
Personality
Dorn is calm, patient, and thoughtful despite his fearsome appearance.
He believes strength should serve others rather than dominate them and has little patience for bullies, tyrants, or those who abuse positions of authority.
Strengths
- Courageous in the face of danger
- Deeply loyal to trusted companions
- Strong moral compass
- Protective of the vulnerable
Weaknesses
- Carries guilt over his exile
- Struggles to forgive himself
- Often places others before his own wellbeing
- Slow to adapt when honour conflicts with practicality
Appearance
Standing over six feet tall, Dorn possesses the broad-shouldered build of a lifetime hunter and warrior.
His pale grey-green skin resembles weathered stone, while his long dark hair is tied into a heavy braid. Grey-green eyes watch the world with quiet patience, and his expression often appears thoughtful rather than aggressive.
Though capable of tremendous violence in battle, Dorn’s presence is more often compared to a mountain than a storm—steady, enduring, and difficult to move.
Allies
Tuma
The man whose notice brought Dorn together with a new group of adventurers.
The Adventuring Party
Companions met through Tuma’s call for aid. Though their journey is only beginning, they have already started to earn Dorn’s trust and respect.
Frontier Folk
Hunters, rangers, caravan guards, and settlers who live by honesty, hard work, and self-reliance.
Enemies
The Zhentarim
The organisation whose influence corrupted Varek and helped destroy Dorn’s former life.
Varek’s Legacy
Though Varek is dead, the consequences of his actions continue to echo across the region.

Treasured Possessions
Ironstone Wanderer
A small figurine carved from iron ore and gifted by the merchant Mikel Soridem after Dorn rescued him from raiders on the road to Triboar.
The figure depicts a lone traveller standing against the wind.
To most people it is little more than a simple trinket. To Dorn it represents the belief that strength should be used to protect others and that even small acts of kindness can leave a lasting mark upon the world.
Elk Tooth Talisman
A polished mountain elk tooth suspended from a braided leather cord.
Taken during Dorn’s first successful solo hunt, the talisman reminds him of his youth, his people, and the values he still strives to uphold despite exile.
